Peter is living proof that not all lawyers are heartless.
My small dog business was hit with an EEOC complaint that was a pack of outright lies. It was an accusation that shocked the conscience of the two members of my staff who had been accused.
Prior to Peter every lawyer and every official insisted the only viable approach was a settlement. I refused because I know the hearts of the folks accused and what went down. And I knew that without the lies being aimed at these folks the accuser had no issue of discrimination.
Peter understood the importance to me of proving their innocence in court. I just wasn’t willing to abandon my and my staff’s reputation for integrity. When I told Peter this he didn’t tell me I was foolish. All he said was “Let me interview them and we will see where we go from there.”
From that point on Peter was amazing. Not just on the points of the law and compliance with the process, but regarding their innocence.
For months we rejected any and every request from the EEOC and the opposing lawyer. The turning point was Peter’s interactions with the EEOC investigator. In the face of the investigators frustration that we would not settle Peter was unfailingly gracious and collaborative. I’d paraphrase his approach as “We just want to help you get this right…because if you get it right you will see my clients are innocent.”
In the end the investigator wrote a 9 page report rejecting outright the claim of discrimination. Both my staff cried tears of relief when they read the report.
